Hackers need your help, find them here.

Last year 25% of hackathon attendees didn't demo a project because they got stuck on a bug that they didn’t know how to get past. A mentor like you could have made the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about the MLH Mentor Matcher? Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we hear.

What is the MLH Mentor Matcher?

The Mentor Matcher makes it easy for mentors to connect with hackers at hackathons via SMS or web form. Unlike other mentor systems, it enables IRL connections seamlessly.

Will hackers be able to see my phone number?

No. Your privacy is secure and all communication occurs via the MLH Mentor Matcher’s phone number.

How will I know when a new ticket comes in?

Simply subscribe to push notifications and you’ll be notified when there’s a new request from a hacker. If the request is something you can help with, feel free to claim it.

What if I can’t resolve a Hacker’s issue?

Simply unclaim the ticket and it will be added back in the queue for another Mentor to claim.

What if I don’t see my event listed?

Your event hasn’t been created yet. Contact your MLH Coach or the local Hackathon Organizers and they can set it up for you.

Is there a mobile app for the MLH Mentor Matcher?

No, but the website is mobile friendly. If you subscribe to push notifications on your mobile phone, you'll receive notifications the same way you would from an app.

How is this better than a #mentor Slack channel?

Slack is great for a quick question and crowdsourcing answers but it is more ephemeral, noisy, and not a traditional queue. It is not always evident whether a mentor has claimed a ticket and is on their way to support you. With the MLH Mentor Matcher, a support ticket is automatically created from a hacker’s texts, greatly simplifying the process of escalating a chat conversation to a ticket. This makes it way easier for you to find the right hackers who need your help. Also, we’ve found that not all hackers download the hackathon Slack app and therefore miss out on the opportunity to get help from a mentor, especially at large events.

How is this better than providing support from a physical mentor desk?

We’ve spoken to a lot of hackers over the past five years and we’ve heard that approaching a mentor can be intimidating. With the MLH Mentor Matcher you can claim tickets according to your skill set and avoid having to say “sorry, I can’t help you with that.” In addition, it’s not always clear to hackers who the mentors are at a hackathon, sometimes they look like hackers.
